Cellbound (1955) is a Tex Avery animated short featuring Spike, a bulldog who tries to escape prison after 20 years in solitary. His plan unfolds in classic Avery style—filled with absurd gags, exaggerated motion, and surreal twists—only to land him right back where he started! Such cartoons are rare today because modern animation often favors emotional storytelling, realism, and structured plots over the wild, gag-driven humor of classics like Cellbound. The unrestrained, physics-defying comedy

Historic World – Old Cartoons on Instagram: "🎬 Cellbound is a 1955 animated short film from MGM, co-directed by Tex Avery and Michael Lah. The title is a pun on the word “spellbound,” and the cartoon is a satire of the newly emerging home television industry in the mid-1950s. The story follows Spike, a dog imprisoned at “Sing Song Prison” (a pun on Sing Sing), who has spent 20 years digging an escape tunnel using a teaspoon. He accumulates a massive pile of dirt outside his window, which goes u

Old School Toons on Instagram: "Cellbound (1955) is a short animated comedy produced by Metro Goldwyn Mayer and directed by Tex Avery alongside Michael Lah. The cartoon plays on the idea of being trapped and mistaken identity, using exaggerated slapstick and fast pacing that Avery was famous for during his MGM years. The story follows Spike, a prisoner serving an absurdly long sentence at Sing Song Prison. After spending years digging a tunnel with a teaspoon, he finally escapes but hides inside

Cartoons on Instagram: "Cellbound Day 2! “Cellbound” (1955) is one of Tex Avery’s final cartoons for MGM, and it’s a masterpiece of wild exaggeration and surreal comedy. The short opens with a prisoner tunneling his way out of Sing Song Prison after twenty years behind bars—only to dig straight into the office of the warden! What follows is pure Avery brilliance: rapid-fire gags, impossible chases, and visual distortions that push the limits of animation itself."

Hoenest on Instagram: "🎬 Fact: Cellbound (1955) This classic MGM short is a masterclass in “screwball” pacing, directed by the legendary Tex Avery and Michael Lah. It tells the hilarious story of Spike, a prisoner who spends 20 years (and over 6 trillion teaspoons) digging a tunnel to escape, only to accidentally break into the Warden’s office and find himself forced to “live” inside a television set. Released during the twilight of MGM’s golden age of animation, this was actually the final car
